Diabetes Mellitus is familiar to mankind from time immemorial. The term “Diabetes” was coined by Arateus of Alexandria meaning “the melting down of the flesh and limbs into urine” in 1st Century A.D. In 1674, Thomas Willis coined “Mellitus” meaning “honey”. Diabetic patients frequently develop a constellation of electrolyte disorders. These disturbances are particularly common in decompensated diabetics, especially in the context of diabetic ketoacidosis or nonketotic hyperglycemic hyperosmolar syndrome. The disturbances of electrolyte homeostasis are also frequently observed in community subjects. Community-acquired electrolyte disorders, even chronic and mild, are related to poor prognosis.
