Glucopuncture (GP)

Glucopuncture (GP) is a nonsteroidal injection therapy for the management of a variety of nonrheumatic musculoskeletal conditions. GP consists of weekly sessions of multiple local injections of isotonic sugar water (ISW) such as glucose 5% (G5W) or dextrose 5% (D5W).

The goal of GP is to modulate referred pain and support tissue repair. In other words, the goal is dual: pain management and functional improvement. Pain modulation is mainly achieved by intradermal injections, functional improvement is achieved by giving injections into dysfunctional soft tissues such as fascia, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

It is obvious that ISW can also be injected into joint cavities, bursae, peripheral nerves or epidural space, but those techniques are not considered as typical GP techniques. Some of those techniques require special equipment such as ultrasound or fluoroscopy, and additional training. This textbook is designed to offer family physicians worldwide an easy to apply technique with an interesting benefit-cost ratio. When doctors notice the clinical results of those easy-to-apply soft tissue injections, they can further sophisticate their technique by learning fluoroscopy-guided or ultrasound-guided injections.
