Urbanization

A major difference between the ongoing urbanization in North Africa and Sub Saharan Africa as observed by the African Development Bank Group (AFDB, 2012) is that the urbanization in North Africa is characterized by fewer slums which is attributed to implementation of effective urban development plans and policies. In contrast, the urbanization in Sub Saharan Africa as noted by UN-Habitat (2020) is dominated by highest proportion of slum dwellers (65%), insufficient basic infrastructure and only 20% of SSA’s population has access to electricity. In addition, 60% of African citizens according to UN-Habitat (2020) live in places where water supplies and sanitation are inadequate. To a large extent, the manifested urban situation in SSA is attributed to limited investment in infrastructure and the failure to implement effective urban development plans and policies capable of steering urbanization in the right direction.
